Abstract

880,353. Feedwater supply systems for steam boilers. CROOK, C. Jan. 21, 1960, No. 2320/60. Class 123(2) A steam boiler 2 is fired by an automatic stoker 4 driven by a motor 6 having a starter 8 and is fed with water by a pump 16 driven by a motor 20 having a starter 22. The boiler is fed with fuel only during a proportion of a fixed cyclic time interval, for example, for 30 seconds in every minute, the time of feed in each interval being adjusted according to variations in boiler conditions such as steam pressure. The starters 8, 22 are connected in a circuit including contacts 36 which are closed when the water in the boiler drops to a predetermined low level and are opened when it rises to a predetermined high level, the arrangement being such that the starter 22 operates to start and run the pump 16 only when the stoker motor is running and the contacts 36 are closed, that is, when the water level in the boiler is below the "high" level. The pump continues to feed water until the high level is reached or the stoker motor stops at the end of its feed interval. A switch 42 is provided to short circuit the starter 8 and start the pump if the level in the boiler becomes dangerously low. In a modification the pump 16 runs continuously and the feed supply to the boiler is controlled by an electrically operated valve in a pump return by-pass line or in the suction or discharge line from the pump, the valve being controlled by the starter 8 and the float switch as for the starter 22.
