Abstract
879,724. Steering ships. KORT, L. B. W. Feb 14, 1958, No. 4903/58. Addition to 713,584. Class 114. An improvement in, or modification of, the invention claimed in the parent Specification comprises steering apparatus having a chain drive 5 for the spade rudder 1 in Fig. 2 or the nozzle rudder 2a in Fig. 3, a driven sprocket wheel 3 of large diameter fitted on the swivelling annular support 20 of the rudder body, a driving sprocket wheel 4 arranged on the same level as the driven wheels and a steering engine 8 for actuating the drive shaft of the driving sprocket wheel 4. In ship's with a nozzle rudder, Fig. 3, the propeller 11 is on a shortened shaft 10 the bearings of which are in a streamlined housing 18 connected by a strut 19 to the nozzle 20, and the shaft 20 is connected by bevel gearing to a vertical drive shaft 15 extending into the ship. The nozzle rudder is fitted in such a position that when steering astern there is ample free space between it and the rear end of the under-water body of the hull.
