Abstract
Silica flour having a whiteness rating of at least 90, as defined, is derived from a mineral silica which on washing and grinding to silica flour by known means has a whiteness rating of less than 85, by comminuting the mineral silica in the absence of surfaces, such as ferrous surfaces, which would provide coloured contaminants in the silica flour, to a size such that 100% will pass a 120 B.S. screen, and heating the comminuted mineral in the presence of 1 to 5% of an oxide, hydroxide, carbonate, or bicarbonate of an alkali or alkaline earth metal to between 1000 and 1700 DEG C. for 10 mins. to 1 hr. Heating may be effected before, or after grinding, and the added compound may be sodium, or potassium, carbonate, or lithium, barium, or calcium hydroxide. The mineral silica may be sand, or sandstone, and may be comminuted in a silica lined mill with silica pebbles. The added compound may be admixed as a solution, or as a finely divided solid.
