Abstract

876,765. Reducing iron ore. NOGIWA, Y. Oct. 29, 1958 [Nov. 4, 1957], No. 34751/58. Class 72. A method for t h reduction o f iron ores comprises passing the ore into a cyclone reducing furnace into which are blown hot reducing gases produced in another furnace by reaction between carbonaceous material and another gas, the quality and temperature of the reducing gas being regulated in the other furnace so that' no caking occurs in the reducing furnace. As shown using cyclone furnaces, high temperature oxidizing gas and preheated carbonaceous material are fed to furnace I to produce a reducing gas which is blown at high velocity into a melting furnace II fed with reduced iron from a reducing furnace IV. The gases from furnace II are passed into furnace III where the carbonaceous material is preheated and the temperature and quality of the reducing gas are controlled. The gas from furnace III is then passed into the main reducing furnace IV, into which iron ore and finely divided limestone, preheated in furnace V, is introduced and the iron ore reduced to iron. The temperature in furnace III may be controlled by the addition of steam, the endothermic reaction between steam and carbon reducing the gas temperature. The reducing gas may pass directly from furnace I to furnace III, and an iron powder obtained from furnace IV, furnace II, being omitted.
