Abstract

A graded transparent electrically conducting film is produced on a glass sheet by heating the sheet to substantially the softening point of the glass and directing a spray of a filming solution on to a major surface of the heated sheet, a portion of the spray along the centre line thereof being directed at right angles, or substantially so, on to the surface where the greatest film thickness is desired, the spray solution spreading out over adjacent areas of the surface to form a coating of progressively reduced thickness, means being provided for causing relative movement between the sheet and the spray through a definite path during the filming. The filming solution may be an alcoholic solution of tin chloride. The glass sheet may be provided with fired-on silver electrodes to enable the coating to be used as a heating device for de-icing windows or windscreens.
