Abstract
876,255. Making rivets; forging. OLYMPIC SCREW & RIVET CORPORATION. July 23, 1959, No. 25276/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXV] A tubular rivet 20, Fig. 9, comprises a sleeve 26 with a head 30 at one end and longitudinal grooves 34 extending from the other end toward the head in the external surface. Said other end has notches 36 connecting the grooves to the internal surface of the sleeve. The rivet is set by a pin 22 pulled to enlarge the sleeve by portion 44, then to split the sleeve at the grooves and bend the sleeve parts 114 back as shown in Fig. 12, and finally to break at neck 48. A sealing washer 32 may be applied under head 30. The rivet is made from rod, e.g. aluminium, by forging in dies 56, 58, Fig. 4, and then in dies 76, 78, Fig. 5, the central part of the rod being compacted by punches 64, 72, 88, 86. The bore of the rivet is finally drilled. It is said that the compacting causes the wall of the rivet to be of increasing density from its outer to its inner surfaces, so that the stresses therein are relieved as the sleeve is split, and aid the bending-back of the sleeve parts.
