Class 20(2) [Also in Groups XXVI and XXIX] In a hydraulic pit prop 1 the spring 4 of the relief valve 3 is loaded above desired release pressure and the valve is opened by a control mechanism operated by fluid pressure in the pit prop. In Fig. 1 the prop pressure acts against the diaphragm 14 connected to a brake band 17 passing over a drum 18 spring loaded to turn in anticelockwise direction. When a predetermined high pressure is reached the diaphragm lifts to release the brake on the drum which turns and operates the lever 11 to open the valve 3. In Fig. 3 the lever 11 is operated by a spring operated lever 32 operated by a cam 27 rotated by a spring drive 31. The cam is normally locked by a pawl 26 released by a piston 22 acted on by the fluid pressure in the pit prop. Means for loading the spring drive 31 are described (see Group XXVI). In place of the lever 11 hydraulic transmission may be used and instead of a spring drive, pneumatic pressure may be used. The valve may be operated by an electromagnet the circuit of which is controlled by the piston 22 or by an oscillating armature motor. The piston 22 may be connected directly to the valve 3.
