Abstract

875,838. Contacting a gas with a liquid. WEIR Ltd., G. & J. June 8, 1959 [June 27, 1958], No. 20656/58.. Class 55 (2). [Also in Group XIII] Apparatus for washing all, or part of, the vapour produced by a raw sea, river, or other impure water evaporating plant, which vapour is subsequently condensed for use as make-up water for a high-pressure boiler comprises a cylindrical scrubbing vessel 11 which is provided, interiorly and centrally within its lower portion, with a pipe 12 which has a vapour inlet 22 and vapour outlet perforations 13 and which extends longitudinally within a body of filter water 24 which is obtained from a selected condensate point in the system exteriorly of the vessel 11 where the temperature of the water corresponds approximately to the saturation temperature of the vapour entering the inlet 22. The inflow and outflow rates of filter water 24 through connections 19, 20 are adjusted to maintain the water level 25 constant, the vessel being pro. vided exteriorly with a water level glass 16 and an electric light fitting 17 with a sight glass 18. Water draining and sampling connections 21, 27 respectively are located in the bottom of the vessel the outflow from the connection 20 being led to a convenient point in the raw water evaporator system. All of the vapour for purifying flows through the pipe perforations 13 and upwardly through the perforations of a pair of superposed distribution plates 14 which extend across the lower portion of the vessel 11 below the water level 25 the vapour then passing past a baffle 15 in a vapour space 26 in the upper portion of the vessel 11 to an upper outlet 23. Where the vessel 11 is installed on a ship transverse partitions 28 may be provided to subdivide the vessel into a number of compartments so that the vapour is equally distributed between the several compartments.
