Abstract
1,240,072. Drying gases. MALONEYCRAWFORD TANK CORP. 8 Oct., 1969 [24 Oct., 1968], No. 49410/69. Heading B1L. Water vapour is removed from natural gas at the wellhead by passing the gas upward, in overall countercurrent flow to a preferably refrigerated calcium chloride brine having an initial specific gravity of 1.35-1.40, through a series of scrubbing tray systems, the flow of brine and gas within each tray system being cocurrent. As shown, one such tray system comprises tray 42 extending across column 10 and superposed above tray 40 which does not entirely extend across the column. As brine passes down the column it is caught by tray 42 and passed by central downcarrier 44 to tray 40 where it collects until it reaches the level of weir 64 (see also Fig. 2, not shown), when it passes into space (50) and drains therefrom to the next lower tray system. Rising gas passes up through nozzles 46, 48 and (50) and entrains brine in its passage through concentric housing 47. Deflector 70 knocks down the entrained brine which collects in tray 42 and passes thence back to tray 40, while the gas stream passes on up the column. An alternative form of tray system is illustrated in self-explanatory Fig. 4 (not shown). The dilute brine effluent is not reconcentrated for reuse, and the apparatus is well-adapted for use at off-shore wellheads.
