Abstract
A crude pyrethrum extract, especially one containing 20 to 30% by weight of materials extracted from pyrethum flowers, is purified by mixing the extract with a hydrocarbon solvent boiling within the range 125-350 DEG C., treating the mixture with trisodium phosphate dodecahydrate, heating it at 40 DEG to 70 DEG C. for 1 to 24 hours, chilling the mixture at -10 DEG C. to -30 DEG C. for 1 to 24 hours and separating the sludge so formed. It is preferred to dilute the crude with kerosene to a pyrethrin concentration of 10 to 15% and add 0.01 to 1% of trisodium phosphate dodecahydrate. The clarified extract may be treated with charcoal to remove colour and the so formed clear pyrethrin solution is used as such, or after further dilution with kerosene, as an insecticide.
