Abstract
Vitamin B12 is obtained in a process which comprises incubating a nutrient medium inoculated with a known vitamin B12 producing strain of a thermophilic organism which grows at a temperature above 45 DEG C. e.g. B. stearothermophilus, B. coagulans, and B. circulans. Suitably the nutrient medium contains a source of amino acid, a source of cobalt ion, trace metals and a buffer. Preferably the fermentation is effected under aerobic conditions at a pH between 6.0-7.5.ALSO:An animal feed supplement is obtained in a process which comprises inoculating a nutrient medium with a known vitamin B12 producing strain of a thermophilic organism which grows at a temperature above 45 DEG C, maintaining the growth under submerged aerobic conditions at temperatures preferably in the range 55 DEG -75 DEG C., preferably with agitation until the maximum content of vitamin B12 has been attained, and recovering a concentrate of vitamin B12 from the medium by conventional methods e.g. heating, addition of acid and evaporation. Specified organisms are B. stearothermophilus, B. coagulans and B. circulans. Suitably the nutrient medium contains a source of amino acid, a source of cobalt ion, trace metals and a buffer.
