Abstract

873,903. Ion-exchange materials. PERMUTIT CO. Ltd. Feb. 6, 1959 [Feb. 6, 1958], No. 3955/58. Class 140. An ion-exchange material is produced by coating a gauze foundation with a suspension of particles of a resin having ion-exchange properties in a solution of a polymer and allowing the solvent for the polymer to evaporate or driving it off. The gauze foundation may be of cotton, rayon, polyvinyl chloride or similar polymer, and is of open mesh. The solvent for the polymer may also dissolve the material of the gauze to form a firm bond between the polymer and the gauze. The polymer and the material of the gauze may be the same material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride. The ion-exchange resin may be a sulphonated cross-linked polystyrene resin. The solvent may be tetrahydrofurane.
