873,563. Photo-electric measurement of reflectance. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON-HOUSTON. Jan. 13, 1960 [Jan. 13, 1959], No. 1324/60. Class 40(3) Measuring and reference beams of light from a source 1 (an incandescent lamp with a metallic filament) are reflected respectively from a specimen 5 and a standard 6 and impinge alternately on a photo-electric cell through the single aperture 11 of a rotating or otherwise moving shutter 10, the light path from the specimen including an adjustable Goldberg double-wedge assembly 9 and the path from the standard including a similar but preset wedge assembly 13. The electric impulses from the photo-electric cell may be displayed as vertical deflections on a cathode-ray oscilloscope with a horizontal deflection synchronized with the shutter rotation and the wedge assembly 9 adjusted until equal vertical deflections are obtained. The apparatus is stated to be of use in determining the efficiency of domestic washing machines from reflectance measurements made on artificially pre-soiled fabrics. If desired the standard 6 may be dispensed with so that the level of reference light is determined solely by wedge assembly 13. A Goldberg wedge assembly is described with reference to Fig. 2 (not shown) and comprises a first long optical wedge adjustable in a frame to position any desired portion in the light path together with a stationary wedge of opposite inclination. The two wedges are cut from translucent glass. At least one of the wedges is tinted.
