[Also in Division D1] In fabric straightening apparatus in which weft irregularities are detected by investigating the distribution of light reflected from the fabric using photo-cells, a glass screen is disposed between the fabric and the cells to minimize the effect of light variations due to fluttering of the fabric. Light from a source 9, Fig. 2, is directed through a glass screen 4, Fig. 1, on to the fabric. Light is reflected from the fabric on to the screen and the patch of light produced is viewed by photoresistors 10, 11 arranged symmetrically with respect to the direction of illumination. The photo-resistors are connected in a bridge circuit which is balanced so long as the weft is straight but unbalanced if it is at an angle. Unbalance of the bridge is used to control a mechanical web straightener. A further cell may be provided to receive light reflected directly in the line of illumination and its output used to compensate the outputs of the cells 10, 11 for any residual undesired variations of light intensity. A plurality of detector heads may be provided across the fabric web to determine whether the weft is bowed or skewed.
