Abstract
871,594. Discharge apparatus. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 30, 1959 [Oct. 27, 1958; July 23, 1959], Nos. 34340/58 and 25340/59. Class 39(1). In a cathode ray tube or thermionic valve wherein a glass exhaust tube extends from the centre of the pressed glass base and is encircled by a ring array of fins passing through the base, the exhaust tube is heated for sealing off short by a sleeve surrounding the exhaust tube and heated by an induction coil, the sleeve having a radially thin portion which extends in the annular space between the ring of fins and the exhaust tube. In one form, Fig. 1, the induction coil 7 heats carbon sleeve 6 which surrounds the 'exhaust tube 3. The cathode ray tube has a cap (not shown) through which the fins 4 pass and which accommodates the exhaust pipe. After the exhaust tube has been sealed off the pipe is annealed by the heat radiated from sleeve 6. In a modification, Fig. 2, a stainless steel sleeve 7 is supported by a refractory insulating member 12 grooved to hold the induction coil 7. Members 13, 15, 16 are also of refractory insulating material. 16<SP>1</SP> may be a single annular recess.
