Abstract
871,033. Washing machines. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. May 13, 1959 [May 28, 1958], No. 16414/59. Class 138 (2). [Also in Group XXIV] A washing-machine motor (34, Fig. 2 or 98, Fig. 3), is rotated in one direction to reciprocate an agitator and in the opposite direction to produce a high-speed spin. In Fig. 2, the motor shaft 50 carries freely-rotatable pulleys 54, 56 which can be coupled to the shaft 50 through a screw clutch 58. Clutch 58 comprises friction facings 74 on a nut member 72 threaded on a clutch screw 66 keyed to shaft 50. According to the direction of rotation of motor 34 and due to the inertia of nut member 72 drive is transmitted through a belt 84 or 86 to a pulley 46 or 48 fixed to a rotatable housing 26. When housing 26 is rotated in one direction by belt 86, an agitator shaft 24 is reciprocated vertically, and when rotated in the opposite direction by belt 84, agitator shaft 24, and tub shaft 25, are rotated. In Fig. 3 the motor shaft 100 carries oppositely-threaded portions 104, 106 and stop members 108, 110. When the shaft rotates in one direction a drive roller 112 moves axially to transmit highspeed drive to an inner spin track 96 and a drive roller 116 moves axially, free of an agitate track 94. Reverse rotation transmits low-speed drive through roller 116, and roller 112 is free. Tracks 94, 96 are bolted to a housing 26 containing mechanism similar to that in Fig. 2.
