[Also in Group XIII] A clutch for a washing machine of the vertical spinning tub and agitator type includes a dog clutch between the reciprocatory drive and the agitator shaft, the clutch being engaged by the action of a frictionally actuated control disc when rotation of the drive is in one direction and disengaged by its rotation in the reverse direction. As shown, pulley 11 on motor 7 drives double pulley 13, 13<SP>1</SP>, pulley 131 drives belt 16 and pulley 17, and pulley 19 drives belt 20 and pulley 21 directly connected to crank 37 which reciprocates crank 32 in the conventional way by means of a connecting rod 35. The impeller 5 is fixed to shaft 23 on which collar 24 is keyed and can slide teeth 26 into engagement with teeth 33 on crank 32 by the movement to the right of lever 44 pivoting lever 30 and fork 28 about their fulcrum 29. When the motor rotates in the direction shown by arrow 59 (Fig. 3), the rotation of the pulley 21 turns control disc 38 as shown so that its projecting arm 42 pulls rod 44, lever 30 &c. to bring teeth 33 and 26 into engagement to operate agitator 5. The spin tub 2 is not rotated because of the presence of a free-wheel device 49 between pulley 13 and driven disc 46, and also disc 46 is held by the engagement of head 56 of lever 54 in one of the recesses 48 therein. Reverse rotation in the direction of arrow 62 (Fig. 2) turns control disc 38 in the direction of arrow 63 to disengage head 56 from recess 48, the forward movement of rod 44 by arm 42 separating teeth 26 from 33 and stopping the drive to the agitator, while there is now a positive drive from pulley 13 to disc 46 which is in frictional engagement with friction disc 53 fast on hollow shaft 14 driving tub 2 at high speed for spin drying.
