Abstract

871,014. Dashpots. DORAN, T. J. Dec. 2, 1957 [Oct. 5, 1956], No. 30386/56. Class 108(3).[Also in Group XXV] A dashpot for a door closer, (see Group XXV) comprises a piston 9 which moves to the right in a cylinder 8 when the door is opened, oil then passing freely in the opposite direction through passages in the piston controlled by non-return ball valves. When the door closes and the piston returns to the left oil can flow to the right only by way of the hollow piston rod 10 and a transverse port 29 formed in the wall of the piston rod. A rod 30 disposed within the rod and provided with a flat 31 opposite the port 29 may be rotated by a handle 32 to vary the restriction to the flow of oil. A groove 37 is provided to permit snap closing of the door at the end of its closing movement. The piston may be skirted and have a portion of the skirt cut away to match the groove. The piston may be rotated to misalign the cut out portion and the groove to eliminate the snap action.
