Abstract
870,602. Valves. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Aug. 5, 1959 [Aug. 8, 1958], No. 26717/59. Class 135. A safety valve comprises a valve member 2 biased on to a valve seat 4 by a spring 6, a diaphragm 3 providing a seal downstream of the seal formed between the valve member and its seat and fluid-responsive means provided for mechanically rupturing the diaphragm. The valve member 2, which closes off the end of a conduit 1 carrying a pressurized fluid, is loaded by the spring 6 acting between a plate 5 and a guide 8, the position of the latter being adjusted by a screwed rod 7; the plate 5 clamps between it and the valve member the diaphragm 3 in the form of a thin metal disc welded at its periphery to the conduit. A sleeve 9, having a cutting edge 10, is loaded by a spring 13 towards the diaphragm but is retained, in the inoperative position, by a latch 11 which is released by a trip catch 14 actuated by a bellows 16. In operation, any build-up of pressure in the conduit 1 tends to open the valve 2, this pressure also being communicated via a pipe 18 to the bellows 16 which, against the action of a spring 17, actuates the latch 14 thereby releasing the spring-loaded sleeve 9, the latter then shearing the diaphragm and permitting the escape of the fluid to atmosphere through an orifice 19; the latter may be replaced by a pipe connected to an exhaust manifold.
