Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0869796/IV (b)/1> where R represents an acyl group or a hydrogen atom, and the preparation thereof by treating appropriately substituted p-methylsulphonylbenzyl-amines with a dichloroacetylation agent and, where R is an acyl group, by acylating the compound of the formula above where R is hydrogen, and also pharmaceutical compositions (see Group VI) containing the products. The products have amoebicidal properties. 2-Chloroethyl N-(p-methylsulphonylbenzyl) carbamate is prepared by treating p-methylsulphonylbenzylamine with b -chloroethyl chloroformate. p-Methylsulphonylbenzyl bromide is prepared by appropriate bromination. N- (2-Hydroxyethyl)- pmethyl-sulphonylbenzylamine and O-acyl derivatives thereof are prepared by condensing p-methylsulphonylbenzaldehyde with an amine of the formula H2NCH2CH2OR and reducing the product, or by condensing p-methylsulphonylbenzylamine with a compound of the formula RO,CH2CH2 Y (where Y is a reactive ester residue), or by treating 2-chloroethyl N-(p-methylsulphonylbenzyl) carbamate with caustic alkali, and the O-acyl derivatives may also be prepared by acylation of the hydroxy compound.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise compounds of the general formula <FORM:0869796/VI/1> where R represents an acyl group or a hydrogen atom, with a suitable diluent. Oral preparations may be in the form of tablets, pills, dispersable powders, granules, capsules, emulsions, solutions, suspensions, syrups and elixirs. An example of a tablet is given. The compositions have amoebicidal activity.
