Abstract

869,737. Statistical apparatus. SPERRY RAND CORPORATION. Nov. 24, 1959 [Nov. 24, 1958], No. 39893/59. Class 106 (1). A record card bears each bit of information in the form of a series of striae formed in or on the card at a location which is characteristic of the information it represents. The striae may be slits cut in the card or lines printed in fluorescent, phosphorescent or magnetizable ink. As illustrated in Fig. 1 the five striae 15 which constitute each bit 12 are of a magnetizable material. Reading is effected by passing the card under a number of variable reluctance sensing elements 3 having output terminals 6, 6a. If the striae are pre-magnetized reading may be effected by conventional reading heads. The output from each element 3 in the presence of a bit 12 is a train of five pulses generated as the striae pass under the element. Terminals 6, 6a are connected to an integrating circuit which controls a threshold amplifier so that an output is obtained only when five pulses have been supplied. This arrangement avoids reading errors due to spurious marks on the cards.
