Abstract

A platinum catalyst containing adsorbed hydrogen and carbonaceous material is regenerated by treating with (1) a regeneration gas containing 0.2-2% (preferably 0.2-1%) by volume of oxygen at 400-600 DEG F. (preferably 450-575 DEG F.) for 10-360 (preferably 15-140) minutes, (2) an oxygen-containing gas, preferably of the same volume % coiled of oxygen as in (1), under preferred conditions of 650-850 (particularly 700-800) DEG F. for 1-60 (particularly 1-48) hours, and preferably with (3) a rejuvenation gas containing oxygen with a partial pressure of 5-200 (particularly 14-50) p.s.i.a. for a period of up to about 10 (particularly 1-8) hours, and especially at 950-1050 DEG F. Preferably the gases used in (1), (2) and (3) each contain not more than about 2% by volume of water. It is stated that in stage (1) the absorbed hydrogen is selectively burned, and in stage (2) the carbonaceous material is removed. In the example the catalyst regenerated is platinum/alumina; other carrier materials mentioned generally are silica, silica-alumina, zinc spinel, activated charcoal, pumice, kieselguhr, magnesia and alumina-boria.
