Abstract

869,050. Impedance matching. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. April 20, 1959 [May 26, 1958], No. 13429/59. Class 40(8) [Also in Group XL(a)] A reflex klystron of the internal-external cavity resonator type has means for suppressing undesired modes of operation including a wave trap in the form of a cavity resonator coupled to the external cavity, the cavity resonator containing a dissipative element for absorbing energy associated with the undesired mode. The klystron comprises an emitter 19, focusing electrode 20, grids 16, 18 and reflector electrode 14. Energy is transmitted to an external cavity resonator through an oval ceramic window 23 sealed in a flexible alloy frame 22. The space 22<SP>1</SP> between the window frame and the body of the klystron presents a series inductance to the transmitted wave the effect of which is eliminated by means of a number (e.g. two or four) of flexible metallic strips 24 brazed to the window frame and the klystron body. Coupling between the internal and external cavities is improved by means of a U-shaped nickel strap 37 which also has the effect of increasing the frequency separation between the full-wave mode and the unwanted 3#/2 mode. The external cavity is tuned by a capacitative plunger 29 such as is described in Specification 861,069. The cavity is connected by a quarter-wave section 31 to a wave trap 32 designed to surpress the unwanted mode. A resistance card 36 is arranged in the trap 32 one quarter-wavelength from the end wall. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the wave trap 42 containing resistive card 43 is coupled to the external cavity resonator 39 by means of a quarter-wave section 38. The cavity is coupled to the section 38 by an aperture 41.
