Abstract

786,062. Travelling-wave tubes: magnetrons. RAYTHEON MANUFACTURING CO. June 22, 1954 [Aug. 5, 1953], No. 18332/54. Class 39(1). A travelling-wave tube of the magnetron type with a circular anode-transmission line and a circular cathode is designed for backward-wave operation. An R.F. choke 14, Fig. 1, separates the two ends of the line 10. Cathode 22 is emissive throughout and the electrons circulate endlessly around the cathode, but are confined in the axial direction by end shields 23. The line 10 consists of radial vanes 12 strapped at their inner ends. A matched termination 25 is coupled to the line at one end to absorb forward waves. The output load 52 is coupled at the other end. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the line consists of rods 39 surrounding a cathode 30 and extending through the cover plate 27. The rods are connected together by inductances 41 and to cover plate 27 acting as a ground reference plane, by condensers 42. The oscillation frequency may be varied by varying the electrostatic field or the magnetic field ; the output power may be varied by varying the intensity of the electron stream.
