Abstract
868,399. Liquid dosing apparatus. SCHMITT, P. Aug. 10, 1959 [Aug. 8, 1958; June 6, 1959], No. 27290/59. Class 86 In a dissolving and dosing apparatus for supplying a constant proportion of a softening or other reagent to a flow of water, the reagent is contained in a chamber A the pressure in which is above that in the mixing chamber C during operation, but below when the flow of water is stopped by a valve downstream of the apparatus, thus preventing over-dosing. Granular polymeric phosphate is placed on the porous diffusion layer 7 in the chamber A to which water is admitted by the duct 4, forming a concentrated phosphate solution which diffuses through the layer 7 to provide a saturated solution in the space B. The main flow of water enters the apparatus through a non-return valve 1 and passes through a nozzle 2 which creates a zone of reduced pressure in the neighbourhood of the aperture 3 connecting with the mixing chamber C; as the duct 4 and chamber A are supplied with water of inflow pressure through a pressuresensitive valve 5, phosphate solution passes from chamber B to the mixing chamber C through passage 14, adjustable needle valve 6 and non-return valve 11. The pressure in chambers A, B is equalized without time-lag by means of the connecting tube 8 and perforated sphere 25. The pressure-sensitive valve 5, see Fig. 3 (not shown) is set so that when water is flowing in the main, the valve is open as shown in Fig. 3 and admits water to duct 4. If, however, the flow is stopped by closing a valve in the main downstream of the apparatus, the consequent rise in pressure of the main will close the valve 5. The duct 4 and chamber A will then be isolated at the pressure obtaining during flow, while the pressure at valve 1, nozzle 2, aperture 3 and chamber C will rise to the new mains pressure, preventing any outflow of reagent through the non-return valve 11. The non-return valve 1 isolates the apparatus from any drop in mains pressure during non-operative periods. The chamber A and porous layer 7 may be incorporated in a refill cartridge, see Fig. 5 (not shown).
