Abstract

867,225. Coated fabrics; laminates. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. July 24, 1957 [Aug. 1, 1956], No. 23443/57. Class 140. A label tape capable of accepting printed indicia and of being applied to an unvulcanized rubber article to provide a permanent protectively covered marking after vulcanization of the article, comprises a thin label structure having an exposed transparent slightly tacky ink-receptive vulcanizable rubbery bonding layer 14 adhered to a vulcanizable non-tacky transparent resinous protective layer 13, said structure being removably carried on the front surface of a flexible carrier web 11 having a low adhesion back surface. The tape is printed on its exposed rubbery surface 14 with a vulcanizable ink 15. The label is adhered to the article, e.g. tube 20, or strips of natural or synthetic rubber, by bonding layer 14, the laminate vulcanized and the carrier web 11 removed. The carrier web may be of regenerated cellulose having a low adhesion backsize coating 12 of a copolymer of octadecyl acrylate and acrylic acid. The protective layer 13 may be of a copolymer of butadiene and styrene containing 25 to 50% by weight of butadiene. The bonding layer 14 may include 5 to 10 parts of a tackifier resin, e.g. polymerized beta-pinene resin, per 100 parts by weight of resin.
