Abstract

Synthetic elastomers are recovered from their solution in one or more liquid hydrocarbons, by treating the solution with an aqueous medium at elevated temperature. Specified elastomers are cis-1, 4-polyisoprene, cis-1, 4-polybutadiene, ethylene-propylene elastomers, butadiene-styrene, propylene-pentene-1, and butadiene-acrylonitrile. The aqueous media may be hot water, steam or a mixture thereof. The elastomer solution may be fed through one orifice of a two-fluid nozzle, such as a paint spray nozzle and the aqueous medium fed through the other orifice of the nozzle, the aqueous medium being at a temperature above the lowest temperature at the process pressure at which the mixture of solvent and aqueous medium will commence to boil. One or more p rubber chemicals may be mixed with the hydrocarbon solution of the elastomer and/or the aqueous medium before treating the elastomer solution with the aqueous medium, carbon black, stearic acid, palmitic or a disproportionated rosin acid and alkali metal soaps of fatty acids being specified.
