865,896. Coiling. BRUCKNER, F., BRUCKNER, R., and BRUCKNER, C., [trading as GUSTAV BRUCKNER KOMM.-GES.]. Oct. 28, 1959 [Jan. 13, 1959], No. 36666/59. Class 83(4). Apparatus for the manufacture of coiled filaments comprises a winding-head intermittently rotatable for winding the coils around a core wire moving in the longitudinal direction and, while not rotating, for producing a straight or approximately straight piece of filament between successive coils, a coupling for rotating the winding head, and a counting mechanism for counting the revolutions of the winding head and controlling the coupling so as to stop the winding head after a predetermined number of revolutions. Core wire 3 is pulled by a driven take-up drum 2 from a drum 1 through a winding head mounted on a disc 17, carried together with a disc 16, by a shaft 15 driven, through a magnetic coupling 13, by a shaft 11 driven through gears by a motor which drives the drum 2. Tungsten filament 19 from a bobbin 18 on the .disc 17 passes over a guide roller 20 and winding nozzle 21 on to the core 3. In operation, with the coupling 13 energized, and the winding head consequently rotated, the revolutions of the dscs 16, 17, and thus the winding head, are transmitted to counting-mechanism 49 by a photo-electric cell 43<SP>1</SP>, scanning a light source 42 through slots 39, 40 in the discs 16, 17. The discs 16, 17 are relatively adjustable to vary the length of the effective slot 41, Fig. 2, formed by the slots 39, 40. After a predetermined number of turns have been counted the coupling 13 is automatically de-energized to disconnect the drive to the winding head, the counting mechanism 49 and the photo-electric cell 43<SP>1</SP> also being switched off. A photo-electric cell 43, scanning another light source 42 through a slot 41 in discs 9, 10 on the shaft 11, and a counting- mechanism 47 are switched on and, as the core wire 3 continues to move forward, a straight section 19<SP>11</SP> of the filament is produced. After a predetermined number of revolutions of the discs 9, 10 the winding head is again rotated to form the succeeding coil, an annular groove 23 in a rotatable roller 22 beneath the core 3 aiding in starting the new coil. The coils are cut off and the core wire removed. Half-revolutions may be counted by forming two diametricallyopposed slots in the discs. Already coiled filament may be coiled on a core wire.
