Abstract
Polyethylene terephthalate is dissolved in a solvent which is (a) pyrrole; (b) an alpha, alpha prime dihalogenated ketone (e.g. 1 : 3-dichloro-2-propanone, 1 : 3-dichloro-2-butanone or 2 : 4-dichloro-3-pentanone; (c) a toluate of formula:- <FORM:0865869/IV (a)/1> wherein R is -CH3 or -C2H5; (d) a benzoate of formula:- <FORM:0865869/IV (a)/2> wherein R is -CH3 or -C2H5; (e) phenylacetonitrile or alpha-phenyl propionitrile; (f) an oxazole, thiazole or imidazole of formula:- <FORM:0865869/IV (a)/3> wherein R is -O-, -S- or -NH-, R1 is hydrogen or methyl and R2 and R3 are methyl groups; or (g) benzoxazole, benzothiazole or benzimidazole. The solution may also contain a plasticizer, a pigment, a dye, an anti-static agent or a fireretarding agent. The solutions are suitable for the manufacture of fibres or films by wet- or dryspinning methods, or for coating or impregnating.
