Abstract
A film stock adapted to the bearing and improved retention of dichroic dyes comprises at least one layer of an orientable, transparent, high molecular weight, hydroxyl-containing vinyl polymer having the molecules thereof predeterminedly oriented and including therein a dye mordant comprising an organic compound containing basic nitrogen. Polyvinyl alcohol is the specified vinyl polymer while dye mordants are beta-diethylaminoethyl-methacrylate polymer, polyethylene imine, an alkyl imidazoline hydroacetate, cetyl ethyl morpholinium ethyl sulphate, phenylbiguanide, a condensation product of formaldehyde and dicyandiamide, a complex tertiary amine acetate, dicyandiamide, poly-2-vinyl pyridine and polyacrylamide. The mordant may be incorporated in the stock by imbibition therein (e.g. using an acetic acid solution of the methacrylate polymer) or by incorporation into the plastic dope from which the film is cast. The mordant may be precipitated in the film stock, e.g. by after-treatment with an aqueous solution of mono-and di-butyl naphthylene sodium sulphate containing a small quantity of sodium sulphate. The orientation may be carried out by stretching. Specifications 556,578 and 562,877, [both in Group XX], are referred to.
