Abstract

865,573. Ultrasonic flaw detection. KELVIN & HUGHES Ltd. April 7, 1959 [April 15, 1958], No. 12010/58. Class 40(7) [Also in Groups XXII and XXIV] An ultrasonic flaw detecting probe 41, flame cutting head or pen recorder is moved in two mutually inclined directions under the control of a differential gear 18, 28 the side-wheels of which are selectively driven through endless chains 19, 24. The components shown within a frame 10 are mounted thereon, and, for movement in one direction, the frame is moved on rails parallel to fixed chains 15, 15<SP>1</SP> by driving the chain 19 meshing sprocket teeth on the differential side wheel 18, which latter is also connected to a sprocket 16 meshing the fixed chain 15, which latter acts as a rack to cause bodily movement of the frame 10 in the direction of the chain 15. During such movement the other differential side wheel 28 is caused to rotate at the same speed as the side wheel 18 but in the opposite direction by a connected sprocket 27 tracking the other drive chain 24, now held stationary. The resultant rotation of the differential planet carrier with its shaft 17 is therefore zero. The probe 41 is independently traversed in the frame in a direction at right angles to the chains 15, 15<SP>1</SP>, by driving the planet carrier shaft 17, this being effected by holding the side wheel 18 by the chain 19 whilst driving the other side wheel 28 through the drive chain 24 and sprocket 27, traverse movement from the shaft 17 being obtained by driving an endless chain 40 to which the probe 41 is fast. The vertical-movement chain 19 is driven through an electromagnetic clutch 47 and a hydraulic variable speed gear 45, whilst the transverse-traverse chain 24 is driven through a bevel reverse gear 56, controlled by an electromagnetic clutch-brake 57, and another hydraulic variable speed gear 54. Separate motors, or a common motor, drive the variable speed gears, and automatic brakes 63, 64 hold the shafts if the current fails. Counters 53, 62 indicate the traverse movements and tachometers 52, 61, the speed of such movements. Limit switches may be provided for automatically stopping and reversing the movements. The frame may be moved over a tank for scanning a body immersed in water.
