Abstract
Nitric oxide having up to about 2% of isotope-containing molecules e.g. 15NO, N17O and N18O and which are further concentrated by rectification (see Group XXVIII) is prepared by disproportionating of dinitrogen tetroxide with water; the tetroxide being formed during the production of nitric acid. Lean nitric oxide gas leaving the rectifier is caused to undergo an exchange reaction with nitric acid whereby the starting isotope concentration is re-established according to the formulae: NO + H15NO3 \sp 15NO + HNO3 and NO + HNO218O \sp N18O + HNO3. Also isotope enriched nitric oxide liquid from the base of the rectifier is treated with nitrous gases and/or nitrous acid as catalyst whereupon the equilibria between individual molecular types readjust themselves according to the formulae: 15NO + N17O \sp NO + 15N17O 15NO + N18O \sp NO + 15N18O and from which mixture 15N17O and 15N18O may be concentrated by rectification.
