Abstract

H2 or a N2/H2 mixture is purified by treatment first with liquid ammonia and then with a solution of NaNH2 in liquid ammonia prior to passing it into a plant for deuterium enrichment working on the NH3/H2 hot/cold system using KNH2 as a catalyst. The gas may be passed in countercurrent to the NaNH2 solution and the impurities removed are CO, CO2 and H2O. Excessive amounts of water may be removed using a zeolite molecular sieve before treatment with sodamide. The sodamide may be prepared in situ from sodium and liquid ammonia under the catalytic influence of the column wall. The isotope exchange process is conventional.
