Abstract

The transparency of annealed strontium titanate boules is enhanced by heating to 500-1000 DEG C. in a non-reactive atmosphere for example argon, helium, nitrogen or steam, or a vacuum of less than 1 mm. pressure. The initial boule may be formed by feeding powdered titanate through an oxyhydrogen flame so as to form a boule on a refractory pedestal, as described in Specification 730,665. The boule is annealed by heating in an oxidising atmosphere at 1000-1700 DEG C., and if desired subjected to a low-temperature oxidising heat treatment at 200 to 600 DEG C., before heating in the non-reactive atmosphere. The latter treatment may be for 1/2 to 8 hours.
