Abstract

862,360. Laminates. DENNISON MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. (Dennison Manufacturing Co.). Nov. 12, 1959, No. 38446/59. Class 140. [Also in Group XV] A transfer label comprises a paper backing 1, a wax release coating 2, an opaque transferable label 3 and an after-added surprint 4 which is diffused through the label so as to be visible therethrough after reversal transfer and removal of the backing. The label 3 may comprise a plurality of layers and may be continuous or discontinuous. It may be formed of thermoplastic or drying oil compositions with pigments, such as pigments in a vehicle comprising polyvinyl acetate, cellulose esters and ethers, polyalkyl acrylates and methacrylates, vinyl chloride polymers, chlorinated rubber, synthetic rubber polymers, polyethylene, linseed oil, synthetic varnishes and alkyd resins or mixtures of these materials. The surprint 4 is made with an ink (see Group XV) consisting of a substantially water-insoluble dye which is dissolved in a non-aqueous solvent such as wax, ethyl lactate or diethyl phthalate. In one specific example a solvent mixture is composed of 25 parts by weight of acetophenone and 75 parts by weight of phenyl methyl carbinol. Pressure- or heat-sensitive adhesive may overlie the label.
