Abstract
862,205. Photographic materials. AGFA A. G. March 27, 1958 [March 29, 1957], No. 9858/58. Class 98(2) A photographic material comprises an organic cellulose ester support coated with a layer at least 1 micron thick of a polycarbonate having a molecular weight of 40,000 to 80,000 and subbed with a layer comprising (i) a partially saponified copolymer of vinyl chloride and an organic vinyl ester, and (ii) either gelatine or a mixed acetal of polyvinyl alcohol with an aldehyde devoid of water-solubilizing groups and an aldehyde containing water-solubilizing groups, before being coated with a water-permeable colloid layer which may be a silver halide emulsion layer. The polycarbonate layer may contain other polymers such as a cellulose ether or ester, cellulose nitrate or copolymers of ethylenically unsaturated monomers such as ethylene, vinyl acetate and vinyl propionate. The subbing layer preferably consists of gelatine and a partially hydrolysed copolymer of 40 to 60 parts vinyl chloride and 60 to 40 parts of vinyl ester such as vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate or benzoate. The mixed acetal used in the subbing layer may be obtained from benzaldehyde-2-sulphonic acid, benzaldehyde-disulphonic acid or p-hydroxybenzaldehyde and benzaldehyde, tolyl aldehyde, o-chtorobenzaldehyde or hydrocinnaldehyde.
