Abstract

861,769. Two-stroke engines; cylinders; driving-gear. REID, T. Oct. 30, 1959 [Oct. 31, 1958], No. 34929/58. Class 7(2). [Also in Group XXII] Opposed cylinder pairs, Fig. 1, each pair 13, 14 with a common combustion chamber 15, have the cylinders 13 and 14 connected to respective ones of intergeared crank-shafts 28, 24 via main and slave connecting-rods 30,34. The cylinders have drive-fitted therein centrifugally spun cast-iron liners 52 having rings of ports 53 leading to inlet and exhaust belts 70, 69. The ports of each ring are separated by bars which are rounded on their upstream sides; the upper and lower edges of the inlet ports, and the lower edges of the exhaust ports, are similarly rounded. The belts 70, 69 each communicate with opposed passages 64, 65, Fig. 2, one of which communicates with an inlet pipe 67 or an exhaust pipe 66 as appropriate, and the other of which is blocked off by a member 68. A water jacket 18 with inlet and outlet connections 19 is provided for each cylinder pair. Each crank-pin 23 has tapered ends secured in the crank-webs and is provided with flanged shell bearings 62, 63. The crank-shaft end 40, which is integral with the gear 50 and the respective crank web, drives an electrical generator and forms the main power shaft. The crank-shaft end 41 drives a charge compressor which according to the Provisional Specification is a cylindrical casing internally swept by radially movable 'vanes of a rotor mounted eccentrically to the casing, the casing and rotor being cut-off extruded metal sections. The engine described has substantially equal firing intervals, exhaust ports timed ahead of inlet ports, and almost equal inlet gas pressures as between the two cylinder pairs. Specification 681,849 is referred to.
