Abstract

861,340. Lap winding apparatus. T. M. M. (RESEARCH) Ltd. Aug. 13, 1959 [May 21, 1958], No. 16361/58. Class 120(1) A lap winding machine of the type in which a fibre fleece is wound on a mandrel carried in the heads of braked racks has means for accelerating the lap driving rollers to sever the lap and to maintain the increased speed until an empty mandrel is brought into contact with the fleece on the lap driving rollers. When the lap has attained the desired size as measured by rotation of a disc 19, Fig. 1, a motor that drives the lap driving rollers 16, 17 at an increased speed is started, breaking the fleece. At the same time, the brake which retards the upward movements of the racks is released by operation of an hydraulic cylinder 41 and a rack motor 18 is started to drive the racks upwardly through gearing 181, 183, shaft 184 and rack pinions 141. The racks 14 continue to ascend after ejection of the lap and operate a mechanism for applying an empty mandrel to the rollers 16, 17, whereupon the rack motor 18 is reversed and the speed of rollers 16, 17 reduced to normal. The empty mandrel is disengaged from holders 72, Fig. 3, by loading hooks 67 carried on the upper ends of racks 14 and which are operated by cams 71. Also carried on racks 14 are arms 69 carrying a threader 68 which is allowed to swing downwardly and rearwardly when the mandrel is laid on the fleece in order to carry the end of the fleece over the mandrel to initiate the lap-winding operation. Mechanism is provided for stopping delivery of the fleece and to prevent normal doffing in the event of an electrical fault disabling the switch 46 that controls the rack motor 18. If there is not an empty mandrel in the holders 72 or if the completed lap has not been removed from the cradle 74, the machine will stop when the lap is full.
