Abstract

An aqueous slurry is produced by comminuting an aqueous slurry of slaked lime to give a settled solids volume of at least 85% and mixing this slurry with silica. The slurry contains 5 to 12 pounds of water per pound of CaO and 0.82 to 1.5 parts by weight of SiO2 per part of CaO, the SiO2 being present as sand or amorphous silica of minus 200 U.S. standard mesh; 0.1 to 0.44 parts by weight of chrysotile per part of CaO may be added to the comminuted slurry, and up to 0.5% by weight of charcoal or pumice may also be added. A filler of 90% porosity is formed by heating the slurry and drying at 500 DEG to 600 DEG F.ALSO:An aqueous slurry for use as a porous filler for gas storage containers is produced by communicating an aqueous slurry of slaked lime to give a "settled solids" volume of at least 85% and mixing the slurry with silica. The slurry contains 5 to 12 pounds of water per pound of CaO and 0,82 to 1,5 parts by weight of SiO2 per part of CaO, the SiO2 being present as sand or amorphous silica of minus 200 U.S. standard mesh. A non reactive mineral fibre, e.g. asbestos as chrysoltile is added to the comminuted slurry in the ratio of 0,1 to 0,44 parts by weight per part of CaO and up to 0,5% by weight of charcoal or pumice may also be added. A gas cylinder is filled with the slurry under a partial vacuum, heated to 325 DEG F. to 450 DEG F. and then dried at 500 DEG F. to 600 DEG F. to produce a filler with a 90% porosity.
