860,601. Valves. FLEXONICS CORPORATION. June 6, 1957 [June 7, 1956], No. 18049/57. Class 135. [Also in Group XIII] A thermostatic valve suitable for use in the cooling system of an automobile engine comprises a normally closed coil spring 28, to one end of which is secured a member 30 formed with a port communicating with the space inside the spring, the other end of the spring being closed and being connected to the first end via a temperature-responsive element 42 which stretches the spring when the temperature rises above a predetermined value and thus spaces apart the coils of the spring to provide a flow path through the port and between the coils of the spring to the space around the spring. The spring coils in their closed condition are permeable to air, this feature facilitating the filling of the engine water jacket with water for the first time. The temperature-responsive element may be as described in Specification 507,501, i.e. it expands on being heated but does not readily contract on being cooled, the force of expansion being transmitted through a rubber plug 48 and plunger 50 connected to member 30. Vibration of the valve is damped by a sinusoidal spring 70 which bears frictionally on the coils of the valve spring.
