Abstract

The invention comprises 2,3,6 - trichlorophenylacetic acid, its salts, esters, amides and acid halides and a process for its preparation by side - chain monochlorinating 2,3,6 - trichlorotoluene to 2,3,6 - trichlorobenzyl chloride, treating the chloride with a metal cyanide to give 2,3,6-trichlorobenzyl cyanide and hydrolysing the cyanide with a strong acid to give the 2,3,6-trichlorophenyl-acetic acid. The acid derivatives may be prepared from the acid or acid chloride in the usual way. Examples describe the preparation of the acid, the acid chloride, the methyl ester, the amide, the thioamide and the sodium, ammonium, methylamine and dimethylamine salts. Several other salt, ester and amide derivatives are mentioned.ALSO:A herbicidal composition comprises 2,3,6-trichlorophenyl-acetic acid or an ester, salt, amide or acid halide thereof together with a chemically non-reactive diluent or carrier. The composition may contain any of the usual solid or liquid carriers together with the customary emulsifying and/or wetting-agents and other known herbicides may be incorporated in the composition. Lists of suitable diluents and known herbicides which may be used are given and examples describe typical compositions.
