Abstract

859,746. Downward-flow filters. ELLILA, K. L. July 2, 1959 [July 14, 1958(2)], No. 22759/59. Class 46. Unfiltered liquid enters a cylindrical housing 1 at 2 and flows around a lower annular compartment 6b connected by inlets 13 with six separate channels 6a. It flows up into the channels 6a and over a cylindrical partition 4 on to a perforate screen 9. Filtrate flows into an annular compartment 7 and is discharged at 3. Solid impurities are removed by sprays of liquid directed upwardly through the screen by rotating radial pipes 14, the solid impurities being collected in a central compartment 8 and removed at 10, 11. The inlets 13 may be opened and closed independently so that different channels may be disconnected singly for cleaning and servicing. In Fig. 4, (not shown), all partitions in the outer region 6 are dispersed with, and there is secured to the top of partition 4 a horizontal perforated plate which extends inwards over nearly the whole of screen 9. Unfiltered liquid passes through this (8) plate on to the screen. In Fig. 3 (not shown), all partitions in the outer region 6 are again dispensed with but the arrangement in other respects is according to Fig. 1.
