859,135. Reading rate controlling. GOOCH, D. R. June 24, 1959 [June 24, 1958], No. 21581/59. Class 100(3) A reading rate controlling machine comprises a support 3 for reading matter 3a over which a shutter 5 is moved at a predetermined adjustable rate to require the reader to read in advance thereof. An arm 6 of the shutter has a rubber strip 13, Fig. 2, on its underside to engage a conical member 14 driven at a constant speed by a motor 18. The arm 6 passes through a lid 7 hinged at 9 to a casing 11 and is guided by rollers 12. The member 14 and motor 18 are mounted on a carriage 15 supported on rods 16, 17 above which it can be moved by a control knob 10 to adjust the point at which the conical member 14 engages the strip 13 and thus the speed at which the shutter is driven. This speed is indicated by a pointer 20 moving over a scale 21.
