Abstract

858,914. Roller bearings. TIMKEN ROLLER BEARING CO. March 14, 1958 [July 22, 1957], No. 8246/58. Class 12 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] In a tapered roller bearing 12 for a shaft 10, the outer race 18 is loaded axially by a hollow tubular member 32 of synthetic rubber which is inflated with fluid supplied through an inlet tube 34. The member 32 is located in a groove 28 formed in an end cap 24 and forms a seal between the housing 20 and cover 24. A cap 40 seals the inlet tube 34. In a modification, an inner race 52, Fig. 2, is loaded axially by an inflatable tubular member 70 which is located between the shaft 54 and a surrounding ring 68 and between the race 52 and a ring 66 disposed in a groove 64 in the shaft 54.
