Abstract

858,683. Adding filter aid. MITCHELLS & BUTLERS Ltd., and HUDSON, E. J. April 23, 1959 [April 26, 1958], No. 13324/58. Class 46. [Also in Group II] In a method and apparatus for adding a continuously-controlled small proportion of filter aid to a liquid in flow irrespective of the pressure in the system, the main stream of liquid YX is by-passed through B into a vessel A having a slurry of filteraid in its lower portion at E. An annular chamber D freely movable with a clearance inside the vessel A rests on the slurry E and has an axial passage d<SP>1</SP> closed at its upper end and surrounding the tube B. The liquid flows from B down the annular clearance between B and D and across the slurry-liquid interface at the bottom of D, entraining some of the filter-aid between D and A and passing through a tube C to rejoin the main stream. The pressure-difference and the flow of liquid may be adjusted by the valves P, Q, R ; the apparatus (made, e.g. of glass) is then self-regulating for small changes. In a modification, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the vessle D is additionally controlled by a metal armature at its lower end coacting with a magnet carried by a movable tube surrounding the vessel A.
