858,265. Reciprocating pumps. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Sept. 28, 1959 [Sept. 29, 1958], No. 32871/59. Class 102(1). [Also in Group XXIX] A liquid pressure engine comprises two single cylinder units 1, 1<SP>1</SP> having its pistons 3, 31 connected to a work-absorbing apparatus 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, such as a pump, and a coupling line 22, 221 between the cylinders 2, 2<SP>1</SP>, fluid displaced in the coupling line being arranged to actuate means 26, 261 for effecting displacement of a reversing valve 16 which is common to both units and controls the supply and discharge of fluid to-and-from the units. Opposite ends of the cylinders 2, 2<SP>1</SP> of the units are supplied with fluid by the valve 16 connecting lines 19, 20, 21<SP>1</SP> and 191, 201 and 21 to a supply 17 and exhaust 18, alternately. The valve is operated by the displacement of fluid in the conduits 22, 22<SP>1</SP> caused by the movements of auxiliary pistons 24, 24<SP>1</SP> which are connected to the pistons 3, 3<SP>1</SP>, acting on the pistons 26, 26<SP>1</SP> of the valve. At the ends of the strokes the movement of the pistons 3, 31, which are connected by rods 4, 41 to the pump pistons 5, 5<SP>1</SP> controlled by a valve 10 to,draw mud from a reservoir 14 and deliver it through a line 12, opens valves 30, 31, to connect the conduits 22, 221 to a high pressure source 39 and a low pressure space 41 to remove air from, fill, and maintain a correct amount of fluid in the conduits 22, 22<SP>1</SP>.
