Abstract
858,218. Moulding lenses. JOHNSON, J., and LANCON, R. March 3, 1958 [March 22, 1957], No. 6674/58. Class 87(2). A method of making a moulded optical element comprises placing a body 3 of polymerizable material in a mould 1 having at least one optical surface-2, polymerising the body 3 at least in an area adjacent the surface 2, shaping another surface of the body 3 remote from the surface 6 formed by the surface 2, applying to the shaped surface an additional body of polymerizable material, placing the body in a finishing mould having an optical surface to engage the shaped surface to fuse the bodies and complete the polymerization of the whole. The additional body may be placed in the finishing mould 4a so that the body moulded by the first mould spreads the material over the shaped surface, or the additional body may be applied as a coating to the shaped surface.
