Abstract
Oriented films having balanced properties are made from unoriented films of polyethylene terephthalate or other orientable crystallisable linear organic polymer of the requisite high melting point by successively stretching the unoriented film laterally and longitudinally, in each case at a temperature from 70-120 DEG C., while preventing significant contraction in the other direction, subjecting the oriented film to a modifying treatment for a period of 0,01-5 mins. while maintaining tension in both directions so that the film remains substantially unaltered in dimensions, and heat setting-the resulting film at 150-230 DEG C. under conditions such that no substantial shrinkage occurs, the modifying treatment being carried out either (a) at a temperature of 100 DEG C. or more below the temperature in the subsequent heat-setting, or (b) at a temperature above 100 DEG C. and 10 DEG C. or more below the temperature in the subsequent heat-setting. In process (a), an additional modifying treatment or treatments may be interposed between the first modifying treatment and the heat-setting treatment, and the additional modifying treatment(s) may be effected at a temperature between that of the first modifying treatment and that of the heat-setting treatment. In process (b) the temperature of the modifying treatment may be 45-75 DEG C. below the temperature of the heat setting treatment The film may finally be heat-relaxed at 90-150 DEG C. while under slight tension, and a water-permeable colloid (e.g. aqueous gelatin) may be applied to the film, preferably before heat-relaxation.
