Abstract
857,661. Respiratory appliances. HAMPTON, T. A. Oct. 16, 1957 [Oct. 30, 1956], No. 33114/56. Class 81(2) Breathing apparatus comprises a mask or mouthpiece, a housing 4 divided by a flexible diaphragm 6 into a supply chamber 7, which is connected to a source of compressed gas, and a pressure balance chamber 8, which is connected to an exhalation valve 19 and to an air reservoir 18, and a valve 13 biassed to prevent entry of gas to the supply chamber and operatively connected to the diaphragm. The pressure balance chamber and the gas supply chamber are connected to the mask or mouthpiece by flexible exhalation and inhalation tubes 10, 9 respectively. On inhalation of the wearer, the diaphragm 6 is moved inwardly of the gas supply chamber 7 and moves the element 13 which is pivotally mounted against a spring 15 to allow compressed gas to enter the supply chamber. The air reservoir comprises a corrugated tube, which may be radially expansible and contractible and which is disposed between the mask 1 and the exhalation valve 19 to compensate for fluctuations in pressure due to expansion or contraction of the inhalation and exhalation tubes as the wearer moves his head.
