Abstract

857,457. Smokers lighters. GENOUD, H. L. R., and GILBERTON, E. May 23, 1957 [May 23, 1956; Jan. 4, 1957], No. 16409/57. Class 75(3). A lighter using liquefied gas comprises a fuel container 1 having a fuel output duct 13 blocked by a permeable member 7, and a stem 20 extending within the container and having a threaded connection 12 with the container so that the stem can be displaced axially to compress the permeable member 7 to reduce the flow of fuel through the output duct 13, the stem having a slot for a screw driver in the end remote from the permeable member. The output duct 13 is formed in a hollow plug 5 secured in an aperture in the top of the container and the upper end of the stem 20 fits with clearance in the plug. Fuel is delivered to the plug 5 by a wick 16 which passes through a transverse bore 22 in the stem 20. The upper end of the output duct 13 is closed by a spring loaded valve 9. In a modified construction the stem is hollow and the wick is contained therein, fuel passing to the wick through apertures in the bottom of the stem. In another construction the stem is hollow and its lower end is open and terminates inside the container. The upper end of the stem has a screw threaded connection with the plug 5.
